Here you can post messages to other users of the page regarding CD availability, soundtrack discussion, or other such items of interest regarding Zimmer's works.
Here's a MIDI file I made of a piece from one of Zimmer's least known and best (IMHO) scores. Lemme know what you think.
Not too hard, just ask your shop to special order it for you.
Hello!
MANCINA DID NOT BEGIN HIS MUSIC CAREER WITH DEXTER IN ORANGE COUNTY. HE BEGAN HIS CAREER WITH THE SEMINAL ORANGE COUNTY BAND INGRIS PITT FROM WESTMINSTER AND HUNITINGTON BEACH. IT IS SUPRISING THAT THIS FACT HAS NOT BEEN DISCUSSED ON THE WEB. INFLUENCES INCLUDE CARLOS REY, JIM TOBIN AND, LEAD GUITARIST, MARK STEVENSON. MAJOR INFLUENCES CAN BE CATAGORIZED INTO THE "EARLY" PITT AND "LATE" PITT STAGES. THESE EARLY RECORDINGS STILL EXIST WHICH EXHIBIT RAW VOCALS AND GUITAR STYLES, WITH TRADE-OFFS BETWEEN LES PAUL AND STRATOCASTER LEADS.
Do you know the number of edition of the Hanz Zimmer CD: PACIFIC HEIGHTS ?

Exactly how difficult is this CD to obtain? I ask because I just
gewd murrrning,
Yumbo said, "Uses for Willow, and just about any other Goldenthal CD & cover:" Huh? Ummmm, sorry Yumbo, but Goldenthal does not equal Willow. I hate to think about what that score might have been like with Goldenthal's composing, lol

Hi!!
I have one vinyl LP soundtrack to the 1984 film INSIGNIFICANCE
howdee folks,
It's that time again. I finally picked up Smilla, and here's my mutterings on this HGW/HZ collaboration.
Label - teldec/warner
Running time - 55 minutes with 10 tracks.
Listening post - 2 channel stereo YAMAHA mini
Recording - pretty fine, high end restrained.
Here goes:
1 - like WWW, this one starts out in silence, then slowly, carefully 'survey's the stage.....sweeping broadly (whoop, sounds like HOTS now), same instrument.....aha, it's from a movie by the same director. it gets louder...still sweeping.....the violin takes us out.....a wave, a bass thump. subtle, sparse synth effect sounds dot the horizon.....let's build up again.......percussion sets in, loud rhythms........."I mean business"......STOP.
2 - bit of piano, and harp...... pluck, plonk....purrrdy (pretty).
3 - gee, almost thought we were going ot get a dose of THE FAN, but it's more like NEW MUSIC, FOOLS OF FORTUNE. I guess the setting is Europe. keep it smooth and slow..slow atmosphere sweeps, dark. solitary. simple......suspense. very minimal.
4 - gee, this is so low, ominous rumbling, 'pings' like in a sub. The volume range is LARGE - play loud. brushes, light tempo, synth wash/voice, violin, piano, sporadic. VERY intricate. ahhh, there's the MELODY/THEME - a very subtle low bass-based sequence with medium violin narration. here comes more bass. but restrained......whispers. a bass brief, but let's quieten again.....piano briefs, that harp plucking again (a la FOF), bit of violin/rumbling.
5 - start layering, wash, HORNER poke, blow horn, jungle noises, percussion, drums, sweep, left, right, synth, eerie stuff, tempo building, go and go on, hold the rhythm, and then STOP. take a turn.....search over there. slow....deliberate, rattle....ahhh, the familiar strings, jabs, synth bass rumbling. (bit of K2 imagery), cello starts in. let's get darker.....aim for ominous.
6 - that SWEEP!!!!!! ahhh, the cool rhythmic tempo percussion....yeah, get down, ist cool. bob your head, tap your fingers....but we're not getting in over our head, this isn't a commercial movie. ahhh, what disciplined restraint. VOOOM!!!! won't let you sleep.....synth variations.....THE FAN echoes. slowdown, slighting......subtleties....why am I thinking of PACIFIC HEIGHTS.....let's brighten, chase...........gonna get ya....violins please! rein in.....continue......
7 - traditional classical sweep, notes.....yeah! pump it, bit of THE ROCK, ol chap!?? well, not so abrasive....this is Europe - stay cool....nice trumpet exercise...knock knock...synth traditionals...slowdown....slow speedup....horns....strings...
trepidation...onward....oh so subtle percussion, simultaneous sweeping, violins...recurrence...theming....delightfully subtle....ting ting.....deft touches.....oh my, CRIMSON TIDE is filtering through.....ambience.....
8 - balanced opening....ah, the theme.........loverly! so brief! but the reprise....variations....low......FOF again. vroom....choral...man, the intricacies! ....lilting.....thump! the rhythm is back......ta da da dat ti di....
9 - man, it's THE FAN! pum pa pum pa.......WHOOSH. pum pa...WHOOSH...pum pa.....yeah....ti di TEEEE! .......rev that tempo.....ying yang that violin...sweep that synth wash, tap that knocker...cool down....slight solos....bass vibrations...
DARK....with a beat.....choice.....rhythmmmmmm....slowwwww...
10 - FOF again....ahhhh, expanded......more lush, full....oh man (woo) the theme!!! btu short...STOP. the end. wow~.... lol.
VERDICT - well, well, well.....to start - this won't be everybody's cup of tea, esp. for those who only like THE ROCK, CRIMSON TIDE, BACKDRAFT etc. and have had poor reports already.
BUT!!!!!! ok......it took me 4 listens to like it. And on this the 5th, I think the world of it! trouble is, for one, you NEED to listen to it turned UP, to hear all the juiciness. this one needs nurturing. definitely not one that can be appreciated in the background.
LOWDOWN - this would be the CLASSICAL of all synth scores. very intricate, elaborate, painstakingly built. this is not a "POP" score. it is a 'mature' one, culling the best of Hans past European scores, and giving it a noir nouveau, which I bet is well tailored if not influenced by the narration of the movie to the core.
What is needed - patience, loudness, tolerance, curiosity.
Circumspect - if you liked House Of The Spirits, you'll LOVE this one. the recording is far superior, and score is more daring. teasingly restrained. It is far more easier to listen to this than CRIMSON TIDE track 2 (which is more 'pop') - this is well endeared, and plays like a classical CD - fanatical listening. You have to LISTEN, not let the CD play for you. Listen deep, and you'll find the joy.
Well done. rare, eclectic, when you're fed up of Star Wars, lol.
Zoodles!!!!

just realised that Hollywood Records/Disney have won the best score oscar for the last few years.
anyway, I actually hoped The English Patitent wouldn't win, coz that Yared score was not dramatic in my view.
and for all the boredom Goldenthal gave me previously, I would've wanted him to win, or anyone else except Yared....gosh - was so fed up of The English Patient! Peer pressure?????
Show score was pretty cool with Bill Conti, and Shaiman did some decent numbers.
But what was the score that was used in Winona Ryder's clip????
And also another one...I can't be bothered watching it again tonight....
Loved the use of Dragon by Edelman.
oh well......enough before thunder strikes.....
Preacher's Wife is still the 'bomb' of the group!

BTW, Brandon, I have a copy that is new and has never been played if you or if anyone else is interested.....Will be $30 or I would gladly accept trade offers.....
I also feel I should mention, upon getting my hands on FYD, that "Toys" was an excellent score, and it's too bad that, while the singing definitely could have been worse, that it was recorded on the original soundtrack with vocals.....ugh.....Brilliant on
FYD, though, even though I can't say that the obvious Trevor Horn stuff at the end is as good as our boy's, lol.
Also, knowing that there are a number of slated projects for Hans in the works, does anyone know which is closest to being completed/released?
And lastly, just found out that the compilation disc of scores to Ron Howard's films (which is where you'll find that re-mastered music to Backdraft) should be released in late May.
.....Man, this is a charged episode of "Montel Williams," lol
I'm off to do some more snootchin........

I was in a store today and spotted Smilla's Sense of Snow, but did not pick it up. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I know it is dark and brooding, but there's an up and a down side to that.
Also, is Rhythm of the Pride Lands worth picking up? I know Zimmer co-composed a few tracks, but I can't say I always enjoy his choral tracks. I dunno.........:)

Anyhoo, the music which you are speaking of IS on the Glory soundtrack. It is track 10, titled "Charging Fort Wagner." The score is composed and conducted by James Horner, but there's obviously a huge influence there from Orff's Carmina Burana. Knowing
Horner, it's not a surpirse! Oh well, he's still done some brilliant stuff (just listen to the entire score to see what I mean!) Hahahaha......
Toodles, all......

It was the american or the english trailer (The american one I suppose) and the music was absolutely terrific.
Later, I heard this music in GLORY by Edward Zwick ( at the end of the movie during the attack on the beach).
But I wonder if this music is the original soundtrack of GLORY or if it's a famous (apparently classic) music which is used in LEON trailer and GLORY ending.
Can someone give me some informations about this and tell me who is the composer.
Many thanks.

Funny you ask. The incredible trailer music for "Geronimo" was not composed by Ry Cooder, who did the score, but ... surprise, Mark Mancina, Zimmer's protege and redeemed composer on his own two feet by now. As far as I know you can't find it on CD. I
only know about it, because I took a class at UCLA and the head of the company who represented Mark Mancina gave a lecture.
Take care, Robin
