HERE's MY LETTER: (Sorry for previous version...)

I'm new man here, but old Hans fun :)

I'm looking for more albums...(or for exchange) Where, and how can I
purchase them? / In my country I can't find more /
/I'm NOT intrested in I'll Do Anything, Lion King, Renaissance Men,
Younger and Younger)

My Cd-s are:
Rain Man 11 - One of the best
BackDraft 7 - Many people like it, but I think it's too 'simple'
K2 11 - WOW ! My favourite. Monumental !
Pacific Heights 8 - Nice
Das Geisterhaus 8 - Very serious
Black Rain 10 - Hmm. Really Zimmer !
Drop Zone 5 - I don't like the 'ACTION' music. /Except track7!/
Point of No Return 8 - Good.
Green Card 9 - Very nice too
The Rock 5-11 - YES!The main theme is wonderful!!! But the action...
Broken Arrow 10 - Another my favourite... Very good sounding.
Thelma & Louise 10 - 4 minutes of passion. Tipical Zimmer! Very good !
Crimson Tide 7 - Not too bed, but not the best.
Millenium 10 - I like the ethnic music ! This too :)
Beyond Rangoon 10 - Nice, nice...
Power Of one 4 - Not the best. But the last track is nice.
Nine Month 3 - I don't like this... Too hmmm... 'easy'
Toys 4 - Just above...

Someone have those cd's, which have only 1 track of Hans Zimmer ?
(Like True Rom, Days of Thunder etc) I have only Thelma & Louise.

Best Regards,
Dr.Victor

Hi everyone !

When stopping by my local CD store, I discovered the soundtrack for the new Penny Marshall movie "The Preachers Wife" starring Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington.

Guess what, the CD, which is entitled 'soundtrack album' only features songs by Whitney. There are NO SCORETRACKS BY HANS ZIMMER !!!!

If anyone knows anything different, I'd be very happy to hear that.

Cheers

Yumbo, re: your question about Mr. Holland's Opus...

I've got it, yes. :) And it's cool! But it doesn't have "Someone
to Watch Over Me"... the only song it has on it is the end credits
song by Julian Lennon, "Cole's Song". Which I think is very much
worth it. :)

Well Yumbo, I think I have to comment this again. (It's a pity I don't have an e-mail address so we could keep this discussion out of the board...)
Okay, the fact is that here in Norway Two If By Sea is a pretty recent movie. It actually screened at our local cinema just a few months ago. As you might understand, Norway is not the film centre of the world, so we get the movies quite a long time after its initial release. You are right about saying that TIBS and The Rock are Nick's only "solo" scores, but don't forget that the man has worked in the shades of Zimmer for a long time and will most probably get a Mancina-like breakthru in not a very long time. (Whew, what a sentence!)
Secondly, you cannot say that it was not a strange move by the producers/director of Dangerous Minds to hire Wendy & Lisa to score that film. Personally, I have not seen it, so I can't comment on the quality of the score. As far as I'm concerned the sound track album doesn't include any score material either. I suspect that this horrible rap hit from Cooolio had a more important musical role in the film than the score had.
By the way, your Zimmer page looks very nice at the moment! Keep up the good work.

Jon

Hee hee, couldn't resist,

First, it's great to see some other input.
Hi, bula, yo,

The NGS-Rock bits are most likely to be tracks 3 and 7.
Therefore, Z-Rock bits are the others - tracks 1,2,4,5,6,8.

Of course, all 3 composers would have helped each other otherwise. Listen
to the other releases with Nick (quite a few), and you'll see a style.

ps. Most of the time, scores are 'co-composed', and never FULLY publicised as such (marketing apathy).
(hey! What happened to the text wrap on this thing??)

The Fan is ONLY available in one edit.

and thar yoo go, short & zweeet.

Yumsainformed yoo.

oh, and in reply to Jon's splurge:

Two If By Sea is not so recent (well, Nick's 1st and last score thus far, before The Rock).
It is NOT featured at all on the CD release.

Michael Bay like countless others at present are former music video directors, so their music taste
would be pretty appreciative.

What don't you understand with Dangerous Minds?
The fact that Jerry produced it, or that Wendy & Lisa scored?

Wendy & Lisa were involved with Toys, and are part of the 'family' of contacts.
Their song is not bad, and it is an apt score, for that type of movie.

As you know, MV is basically Jerry's choice of compositions.
Well, since Mark ain't with MV technically....maybe just Mark, grin.

cheerio!!!

Re: How much of a soundtrack is Zimmer?
Jon Aanensen
E-mail:

On The Rock, there are three composers: Nick Glennie-Smith, Hans Zimmer and a dude called Harry Gregson-Williams. The movie posters actually reveals only two of these names, but the score CD give us three names. I think that this score was composed in col laboration between these three composers, perhaps with Nick as the leader. As you know, Hans is a very busy guy and he could never had made all this music alone concerning his tight schedule. Both Nick and Harry are members of the Media Ventures team, and thus they have this trademark "Zimmer-sound" in their music. Nick is actually on his way towards a breakthrough in Hollywood now; he also recently scored the Sandra Bullock comedy Stolen Hearts/Two If By Sea together with Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains( !)
The director of The Rock, Michael Bay, made Bad Boys last year, where he hired Mark Mancina to write a storming score (even better than The Rock IMO), so it looks like he is a man with nice music taste. Also the producers, Jerry Bruckheimer and the late D on Simpson (R.I.P.) have been known for producing films with exciting and innovative scores, like Thief, Top Gun, Days Of Thunder, Crimson Tide and strangely enough Dangerous Minds with a score by...Wendy & Lisa! I still don't understand this.

Well, well...Preacher's Wife/ET sounds clips on Yumbo's page! Zimmer, he sounds so eeeenglish!! Must change his name, or develop an accent...lol. I just lerv how Mary introduces herself... ;-P

For any Aussies out there, ABC FM (105.9) has a cool program on Saturday nights from about 10pm-midnight. "Knowing The Score" is two hours of movie music, sorry motion picture scores, from around the place. Not the best of nights to have it, but I've list ened to it a couple of times - it's featured (amongst others) James Newton Howard's Waterworld, Marc Isham and last night Mancina's Moll Flanders. Methinks Zimmer is a little too contemporary for a classical music station...!!!

Just wondering, is Army Intelligence/Renaissance Man the same film? Silly question, but hey that's me...lol

Listening to Drop Zone real loud! (Great way to relax 4hrs before an exam - relieves the tension!)

Ciao for now,

Andrew

Boola again,

Just commenting that Twister is certainly enjoyable on home video, and the Space Jam trailer is way cool - appreciate and able to hear the score much more clearly than in cinema. Somehow the 6 channel just stuffs up the mix, or basically poor cinema setup.

Does anyone know who composed that impressionable theme to Warner's SAVANNAH (soap opera)?

and I still have a spare copy of BLACK RAIN at US$15 post included.

reminding you that both Zinfo and Howinfo have new additions!

Hey Jon...

Yes, we finally got it. lolol.

Well, if we waited another month, it would have cost us HALF the price! ie. it's not limited to a 100 copies....I'm led to believe. lolol.

anyway, if you read Zinfo, note that Marlboro only SPONSORED the Adventure Team!

I think Money Train is pretty poor, the sonics are terrible - Speed is always CHOIE; Fair Game is fair, wouldn't rave about it, rather quiet...Speed, Moll Flanders, Bad Boys and actually Monkey Trouble are my choice Mancina melodies.

well, see yuzzzzz!

Boy, you're sending massive postings. I'm glad to see that there are a few persons out there that actually have got the Follow Your Dreams compilation. But it took some time, didn't it? However, I do not agree with you concerning the four tracks entitled Follow Your Dreams. What are so good with these? Come on, Mark sings like a horse and the arrangement (though it's clearly Hans Zimmer) is VERY traditional. And what has this song got to do with MARLBORO??? In my opinion, Fair Game is incredible. The them e is highly melodic, and is just perfect for the opening credits of the film where Cindy runs towards the setting sun.
But did you hear the seagulls in the background? Overall, I think the Mancina tracks are better than the Zimmer ones on this disc, with Money Train and Assassins as other favourites. The Speed theme is just sooooo touching! And Bad Boys really cool.
Well, that's all...5

Oh no, it's me again....

Forgot to blurb that once again (ala Broken Arrow), the sound mix on THE FAN is pretty poor, esp. in noisy scenes, ie. the fast, noisy guitar bits of the score - don't know for sure whether Hans directly wrote for the scenes, or just ended up tossed about by the editor. The quiet scenes are alright, ie. electric cello.

Second - notifying you that i have uploaded sound clips of The Preacher's Wife score with composer/director/news commentary. Go to Zinfo - you zoodles!

3rdly,

Concerning ordering online, the easiest and CHEAPEST is through the following!

You can order Hans from Pentagon:

The MAXIMUM cost is US$19 all up!
will take 3 weeks MAXIMUM.

but I haven't had to use them as yet!

E-mail: Patrick.Renier@ping.be

Hi everyone,

It seems that a lot of people have problems getting Hans' scores.
It had this problem months ago finding Something to Talk About.
Then i heard of CD World.
A huge site on the Net when you can find and order every kind of CDs.
All you need is a Credit Card.

So, i tried last summer with STTA and The Rock soundtracks.
It took 10 days to get delivered.
The CDs were perfectly protected, no problems.

Lets talk about the price now.
CD + Delivery costs + Customs dues = 25 US-Dollars each CD.
It may be expensive to some of you but not for me.
Here in Belgium, it's the normal price for a good CD.

Of course, the more CDs you order, the less it costs.

The site is well done, easy to use.
I'm right now going to order The Fan and Twister.

So, if it can help some of you, just go to http://www.cdworld.com

Bye

The Fan in Australia & a thing called The ZM Collaboration - Follow Your Dreams
yeeeeeeuuumbo!
E-mail:
imc@top.net
Location: Oz

Bula again,

good to see others writing besides me! ok, 2 things on the agenda - additional notes on THE FAN (prior review), and my review of "The Hans Zimmer/Mark Mancina Collaboration - Follow Your Dreams".

here goes....

well, THE FAN finally hit Australia, and it's first weekend BO take has been described as respectable. guess that's better than in the US. anyway - average movie, more like a music video.

and we're here to talk about the MUSIC!
oohhh, but wait....did you notice the ode to the opening credits of SEVEN, much like what ERASER did as well? lots of shimmering light, fades, close-up, soft-focus, like shot with an old hand held camera.

and THEN, instead of Nine Inch Nails sounding funky, Hans is subliming through...

but here's the prior prediction - the score does take one of its cues from Nine Inch Nails!!! 3 songs including 'Closer' (used in SEVEN's opening) are present. Also, the song by Honky - 'What's goin' down'(track 8) is used a lot, it's FUNKY!

ok, as far as music being included on CD, I guess they only wanted to release only the new stuff; however, there was enough music to compile a second album! That didn't stop THE FIRST WIVES CLUB, CASINO, and countless others who just re-release OLD songs.

what am I hinting at? lol. well, they could have used the extra free 5 minutes on the current CD to include either NIN, or more Zimmer. I think Zimmer would have been a nice option, since there wasn't much more score to it (Marco being quite accurate saying the CD covers 80% of the full score).

The best bit which they left out, is when Wesley Snipes hits that elusive home run for his son - the ball is struck, and flying through the air.

I did notice that they left a few scenes out of the MOVIE, and may suggest scrapped pieces of score as well. Will we wait 20 years for the John Williams phenomenon to occur? ie. the FULL score for THE FAN. guess it's someone's fear that they won't be as popular in 20 years. lol.

well...bit of a perverse movie, and does prompt debate about professionalism, and money, money, money......

which is what this ZM Collaboration is about. Worth 4 full-priced CDs, it is elusive. Note there have been prior write-ups about this CD. Go peruse the archives, maybe I'll feel like it, and add some anchor links..but not now, hee hee. besides, this review is as good as it's gonna get!

geez, here's the lowdown, according to the Yum-factor.

...after waiting 3 weeks for it to arrive, after waiting 4 weeks prior (lol) to be ordered, I walked in to see it laying under some papers. I expressly told my flatmate to listen to it before I could get home - see what he thought.

anyway, you will find a pic of the cover on Marco's new Zimmer page. rather than cluttered with pics from the different movies (like with most various artists compilation albums), it is rather simple, BRIGHT (sunset), with a simple title.

-white spine, and on the reverse, imposed on the US Laserdisc artwork for TRUE ROMANCE, is the 21 track listing.

it is IMPRESSIVE at FIRST sight. I have seen bootlegs before, and this was GOOD packaging in my opinion. and its sticker on the front, and textual inlay suggest that it is official stuff. "For promotional purposes only".

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

well, no one pulls the wool over MY eyes, and trivial brain!

I play it, and it starts with the BBC theme to FIRST BORN - a lot like some faust thingie - classical chorus, and 'thumping'.

Tracks:
1 - skip it
2 - Fair Game, as expected.
3 - the same
4 - Follow your dreams - Marlboro commercial theme (never seen the ad campaign) - GOOD STUFFFFFF!!!!
5 - better!
6 - what's happening??!#$#!$%#
7 - oh yeah! good stuff.
8 - days of thunder...no thunder here - sounds funny; ends with unknown cue.
9 - Monkey Trouble, I've heard this YEARS and YEARS ago! where did mancina copy this from? well, the first few bars.
10 - Millenium - duplicate of original.
11 - BAD BOYS! what you gonna do?! well, the 'acapella' bit to start with, and then TRIES to segue into the originally released theme, and TRIES again to segue into the opening credits sequence. - THIS track is where it shows its failings, and gives away the production design. and makes you look at the artwork more, and discover things I'll tell you about at the close of this. Well, if you're an oogler, and looked at the promo pic of Cindy Crawford first, you would know what I'm hinting at.

12 - True Romance, nothing new, 'cept a bad montage!
13 - The Lion King - this is where it gets WORSE! lol.
14 - more TLK farce.
15 - Worth the money - ORIGINAL unreleased track from TLK (found only on European-language editions)
16 - Speed, duplicate.
17 - Toys, better than expected, with culled 12"maxi-single end sequence.
18 - Money Train, duplicate
19 - Thelma & Louise - I like this bit. deserves forgiveness.
20 - T&L , duplicate
21 - Assassins - pretty good.

OK!!!!

synopsis time. let me put it to you, from your perspective, lol.

IF you had a laserdisc player, or a very good Stereo VCR, with most of the above titles in good order (the ones you don't have a CD of). patch it to your sound edit desk, and output the new 'remaster' to your recordable-CD drive.

grab a 100 blank CDs, which are all gold-COLOURED anyway, and duplicate away!!!

hopefully you or your friends have a good PC graphics package, scan a few good pics and logos, and keep things simple. having a good printing press contact is nice.

and there you have a ZM Collaboration!!! EASY!!!!!

strip 'em down!
The 'previously unreleased' tracks can also be found on your crude taped copy from your fave Zimmer videos - I dont' care about the dialogue, and sound effects, coz I can't be bothered to filter them out, or add a karaoke effect.

YOU SHOULD notice the tonal difference between the originals, and the dubbed tracks.

opinion!
Well....since ALL of us wouldn't want to plonk down dosh for a laserdisc player, recordable CD drive, sound mixing desk etc. - it's worth it if you're DESPERATE, lazy to tape them off yourself, or keep changing CDs to play some of your fave tracks (ie. also don't have super YAMAHA CD changers to pre-program your CDs), or don't have those titles already, and not that fussy to start.

smiles....worth it. VERY GOOD EFFORT - whoever that produced it. Could have been better sonically (it's possible, I know how to...), but I'm not complaining. better than most other bootlegs, if you've seen one at all! lol.

IT IS A BOOTLEG, not promotional etc, blah blah. Theoretically ILLEGAL. lolol.

well, in any case, you shouldn't stop yourself from signing the petition to get it OFFICIALLY released, not that it would be all-satisfying (since they botch up the original/official stuff to start!), but it would be CHEAPER, and better than NOTHING!

this CD uses up 73.40 minutes, and couldn't fit anymore anyway, so they really made use of it! lol.

ps. the FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS stuff is the reason you should pick it up - very good (I'm told the EP is available at around $40, and may be 'official'); the pic of Mark is handy (member of Europe?, lol) - posted on Zinfo; and his voice (if it is his) is pretty good - a lot like David Coverdale, Gregg Allman, Terry Reid etc.
YOU will recognise DEFINITE similarities in production, style and melodies between the tracks, esp. the one's with Mancina's input.

ok....so now what? lol. those in Australia (or anywhere alse, if you're desperate), are welcome to write me to arrange for a 'listen' to it.

or just to ask more DETAILED questions....
ok! zoodle-doo....!! and IF you don't, talk about APATHETIC! lol.

hope you are enlightened.

The Rock's orchestra

I actually didn't terribly enjoy the movie The Rock but was incredibly impressed by the soundtrack. I rarely buy music but bought it on impulse, and I've now listened to it everyday at work for 3-4 hours for the past two weeks and still haven't tired of it. It does wonders for my concentration.

I was tickled pink to find that he has other stuff out there. I actually did an AltaVista search on Nick Glennie-Smith not knowing that apparently Hans Zimmer was the force behind the score (what of these other names listed in the credits -- Nick Glennie -Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams?).

My possibly ignorant question is did he use an orchestra in The Rock and if so, which orchestra did he use?

p.s. From postings, I guess Drop Zone, Rain Man, and Backdraft will be the next candidates :-) Crimson Tide would be but I saw a mention of the score being the same as The Rock? Is this true?

There was a reference made to Willow regarding its availability.
I myself took two years in finding it. It is NOT readily available
in most stores here, nor is it in most catalogs. It has not been
readily available in the States for some time. If you were in
Europe however, you could find it easily. I realize this is not
a HZ related message, but I had to address the mis-information.
Don't let this discourage any desperate Willow searchers out
there, though. I do know that the Virgin Mergastore imports it,
and occasionally there are mail-order places that have it.

I do, however, agree with the choices for good Zimmer scores:
Rainman and Beyond Rangoon.

Alright, now time for the marketing ploy. Please visit
Chris Caine's Zinfo page and give your name to his petition for
the release of Zimmer's unreleased scores. Let's get this done!

Hi!!

I don't have any info about NS2, but I do know that _Willow_ is
readily available in most music stores. However, as I'm sure
you already know, _Willow's_ soundtrack was composed by James
Horner--I've had the ST myself, for the past 8 years, and recall
no mention of HZ. Anyway, if your local store doesn't have it,
you can always special order it--it's still popular enough that
it isn't out of print yet!

Just a personal note--HZ's "Rain Man" and "Beyond Rangoon" are
his best works to date!!!!!
